My awful habit, maybe yours too?

Hello you awesome non-smoker or, like me, you filthy cancer inhalator.

I started smoking about 2 years ago and now I’m so… so.. so sick of it, and yet I’m not…
I am trying to quit and it will happen because it doesn’t actually do me any good.

As a smoker (for 2 years) & non smoker (for 18 years) I allow myself to say the following:

if you want to start smoking, have fun it can be of use for having an extra break during work…
(Which brings me to the following point: Why is it that non-smokers are punished for not smoking? Smokers get to have some extra short breaks so they can light up one of those filthy cancer-sticks, while the awesome non-smokers will have to sit behind their desks waiting till their actual break starts. Because if a non-smoker wants an extra break to drink a cup of tea in peace or have a walk around the building to get some fresh air, the boss or other colleagues will think you’re being rebellious in some sort of way. While a smoker gets an extra break without any trouble.)

Smoking costs a lot of money…
What a nice leather jacket, I’d love to have it… but I can’t because I smoke and waste money on giving my lungs an unhealthy tan.
Hmm, I’ll have to live short on money this month, what will it be? Food or Cigarettes…. I’ll take one pack of Cigarettes and starve myself, so I can at least smoke.

-If you quit smoking you can save the money you normally spent on Cigarettes on your own personal Me, myself & I charity…
and buy yourself the leather Jacket, the make-up and a spa-day  and many more way awesome things you couldn’t afford because of the stupid damn cigarettes!

I am going to save all the money I usually spent on cigarettes and buy myself a new couch or wardrobe, way more fun than smoking!

But first I got to really really quit, it will be before this wednesday, today I’ve already smoked 10 cigarettes less than I usually do! good way to go!!

What does this have to do with Food & Dietetics?

Well, many people smoke and want to quit, just like me.
I am afraid of quitting because I’ll temporarily gain weight, and I’ve just tried so hard to lose 14 pounds.
The weight gaining happens because your system isn’t getting any nicotine anymore and hopelessly wants some.
Your body will fight and protest, and gain weight.

I made an agreement with myself for the weight-gaining part, just to make myself comfortable gaining some awful ugly weight.
I have promised myself I can lose the weight a little faster than usual by going on a short crash diet so my half years-work of losing 14 pounds in a healthy way won’t be lost. I’m thinking of Dukan or a shake diet.  It sounds crazy, but it is comforting to me and gives me the space to quit smoking.

If you want to quit smoking and are afraid of gaining weight, find a solution to compromise with yourself so you can quit smoking and have your body back in shape.
